VIU Nanaimo Parking Pass Adjustments effective September 2020

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 pandemic, VIU will temporarily be suspending the annual parking pass and instead be implementing short-term parking options beginning September 1, 2020.

At that time, a one-month parking pass will be the longest-term period that will be offered for parking. This will mean reduced parking fees for everyone and also make it easier for us to manage parking during this time, when many employees and students have less need for parking on campus. As well, it will allow us to adjust more quickly if the need for parking changes over the coming months.

What are the adjusted monthly fees?
Employee General Lots - $48.25 per month includes applicable taxes
Employee Economy Lots - $29.25 per month includes applicable taxes
Student General Lots - $24.25 per month includes applicable taxes
Daily pass - $5.00 per day
How do I buy the new parking passes?

A monthly pass can be bought online through WestPark. Daily passes will need to be purchased on campus at the pay stations or the Park Indigo App or Pay by Phone App. Note: Buying a monthly pass for the economy lots is the most cost-effective option if you are accessing the campus two or more times per week.

What about individuals who have already purchased an annual or longer-term parking pass?

These passes will continue to be honoured, with the extensions applied to them (see below for more details). Individuals that purchased an annual or longer-term pass in July or August 2020 have the option to cancel these passes for a pro-rated refund so that they can take advantage of the new terms/rates. How will the annual or longer term parking pass extensions apply?

In April 2020, VIU decided to pause preauthorized debit (PAD) parking payments due to COVID-19. At that time, it was communicated that longer-term pass holders would receive extensions on their passes; depending on when a pass was purchased a holder may receive an extension of up to five months on their passes. Extensions are automatically granted to those who qualify and will appear on your WestPark account. If you have any questions, please contact WestPark at viuparking@westpark.com or 1.800.469.4169.

When will PAD (pre-authorized debits) payments restart?

PAD (pre-authorized debits) will restart September 1, 2020 with the new rate structure. If you will not be returning to campus or want to cancel this type of payment option, please contact WestPark at 1.800.469.4169

What other options are available if I don't want to use VIU Parking?

We encourage the use of public transit, bicycle use, walking and carpooling. Recently, VIU expanded the bicycle shelter near Building 190 and incorporated a fenced compound with restricted access to improve bicycle security. You will need your VIU student/employee ID card to access the fenced compound.
